Turkish Hamam (Bath)

The history of the bath dates back to the Ancient Romans. Excavations in pompeii, which was buried under ashes after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, revealed the baths used by the Romans. It is understood that these baths were built not only for cleaning, but also for pleasure and entertainment.

The Turks who came to Anatolia from Central Asia made baths all over the Ottoman Empire, mixing with the indigenous Eastern Roman people both culturally and genetically. In the seventeenth century, there were 168 large bazaar baths in Istanbul.
